WASTE TO ART PAVILION COZUMEL

The Waste to Art Pavilion is inspired by Parley’s AIR Strategy (Avoid, Intercept, Redesign) and is a component of the Parley AIR Tourism and Hospitality Program in Quintana Roo, México, funded by NOAA.

Implemented on the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres, the NOAA AIR Tourism Program, in collaboration with CONANP and the Municipality of Cozumel, aims to reduce single-use plastics in tourism operations, increase awareness of marine plastic pollution, and safeguard the Mesoamerican Reef.

This collaborative effort between Parley, Roth Design, and the local community of Cozumel aims to create an open gallery that serves to inspire and communicate to locals and tourists, through compelling art projects and installations. It is designed to tell a story about Cozumel as a Biosphere Reserve and the importance of the Mesoamerican Reef system, the threats that endanger its preservation and concrete actions that visitors and locals can undertake to preserve it. The Pavilion also serves as a communication channel to promote and celebrate businesses participating in the Parley AIR (AVOID. INTERCEPT. REDESIGN) Tourism Program, all of which are taking action to eliminate plastics from their operation as well as supporting other local conservation and sustainability initiatives, fostering a community-wide commitment to environmental stewardship.

The Waste to Art Pavilion showcases Roth Design's multidisciplinary approach, blending craftsmanship and technology to prioritize detail and enhance user experience. Inspired by nature and ancestral heritage, it aims to raise awareness about marine plastic pollution, threats to the Mesoamerican Reef and the biocultural significance of Cozumel Island.

The Pavilion is inspired by one of Cozumel's predominant coral species. Covering an approximate area of 15 square meters, it forms an immersive space for ocean learning, discussion and exploration. Built on a metal skeleton, it’s covered with upcycled polystyrene recovered on the island, creating art from waste.
