Three recent cleanups highlight the different ways our Global Cleanup Network works and collaborates to end marine plastic pollution

Hawai’i

It took a special team effort to clean a hard to reach beach in Lanai, Hawai’i. Over 70 volunteers and youth from our Ocean Uprise program joined more than 20 local organizations and headed out to a remote, rocky site along the island’s coast. In collaboration with the Hawai’i Wildlife Fund, the Professional Windsurfing Association, Love the Sea, local surfers and more, we collected a massive 9500 pounds of marine plastic.

"Pollution doesn’t discriminate,” says Kahi Pacarro, Director of Parley Hawai’i. “Many of the state’s most beautiful coastlines are devoid of human intervention are covered in humanity’s plastic detritus. This massive collaboration is focused on getting these rarely visited, yet gravely deserving locations, cleaned up while our policy and educational programs focus on stopping the pollution at the source."

Guatemala

Over a hundred volunteers came out for Corona x Parley’s first ever cleanup in Guatemala. In the town of El Pumpo on the Pacific coast, over a hundred volunteers came out to intercept 120 pounds of plastic and 570 pounds of total debris. “We are very grateful for Parley and Corona,” said El Pumpo’s president of rural and urban development, “Because our community needs a lots of hands to get cleaned.”

Dominican Republic

Eight professional Major League Baseball players including Nelson Cruz and Amed Rosario helped lead our second Players for the Planet x Parley cleanup in Santo Domingo recently. The U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic, members of the island’s Ministry of Environment, and a number of young MLB hopefuls joined 75 volunteers to clean up two beaches: Montesinos and Fort San Gil. In total, they removed 416 pounds of debris, including nearly 300 pounds of plastic.

As Players for the Planet explain, “these clean ups are not part of our permanent solution, but they help us bring awareness to the true crisis of waste seen around the world. Together with Parley and our athletes, we’re drawing attention to the problem and opening the door for conversations that will lead to lasting change.”
