#ParleyLIVE: Sylvia Earle
Knowledge is our superpower
As the world marked the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in the shadow of a global pandemic, legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle joined Parley founder Cyrill Gutsch to reflect on five decades of environmental progress, the challenges we still face and the fragility of our uniquely blue planet. She reflects on the importance of learning the language of nature and how humanity might finally take seriously our vulnerability.
"You ask what gives me hope? It’s knowledge. As people take to heart who we are, where we’ve come from, where we could be if we really understand our place in the greater scheme of things, there’s plenty of reason to be optimistic and look forward to the next 50 years."

SYLVIA EARLE
Dr. Sylvia Earle is Parley Chief Science Officer, Explorer in Residence at the National Geographic Society, founder of Mission Blue and Deep Ocean Exploration and Research (DOER) and former Chief Scientist of NOAA – the first woman to serve in that role. An early pioneer of SCUBA technology, 'Her Deepness' has spent nearly a year of her life underwater, logging more than 7,000 hours beneath the surface.
"Her Deepness" Dr. Sylvia Earle urges us to consider the impacts of marine plastic pollution, overfishing, ocean acidification and human-driven changes she has witnessed in the span of just 50 years.
