As a kickoff to Climate Week in NYC, on September 23, 2024, Parley gathered creators, thinkers and leaders for an exclusive reception and presentation at the iconic Metrograph cinema on New York’s Lower East Side.

Under the title “Creating a New Economy,” we showcased a selection of the bio- and regenerative materials poised to revolutionize the modern world and invited guests to participate in the critical work of addressing today’s major environmental threats, showcasing how we can solve the interconnected crises of plastic pollution and climate change through creativity, collaboration and eco-innovation.

Special guests and speakers included the legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, Academy Award-winning filmmaker Louie Psihoyos, and Dr. Shanna Swan, a leading environmental and reproductive epidemiologist whose research examines the disturbing link between global fertility decline and endocrine-disrupting chemicals in common plastics.

“We need to create ecosystems to solve problems.”

CYRILL GUTSCH — FOUNDER & CEO, PARLEY FOR THE OCEANS

Taking the stage with Parley crew, collaborators and material innovators, Parley Founder and CEO Cyrill Gutsch reflected on the past 12 years of ocean action and discussed an exciting new alliance that will empower communities around the world to vastly scale ocean programs following the Parley AIR Strategy: Avoid. Intercept. Redesign.

Mirroring the ideas and inspiration shared in the talks, solutions were showcased throughout the cinema. A Future Material exhibit spotlighted select companies and innovations that are revolutionizing the modern material world, including: Bananatex®, Sway, TômTex, Air Company, Dover Street Market/Comme des Garçons, NUVI and Biomason. Panelists shared the synergies between scientists and designers, discussed the inspiration they find in nature, hard-earned wins and the challenges to scaling and disrupting industries.

The takeaway and overarching message: The way forward is in collaboration with nature — and with each other. What we are trying to create at Parley, through our collaborative initiatives and interdisciplinary gatherings, is connection. As Cyrill explained, we need to build ecosystems around the massive, complex problems we face. Solutions are here. Now we need to scale them together.
