ARTIST FLAGS
artist edition flags made from Ocean plastic® supporting the parley global cleanup network
Julio Le Parc
Franco-Argentinian artist Julio Le Parc, a pioneer in “op” and kinetic art, has created an artist flag for Parley x Utöpia in support of the movement to protect the oceans. The Parley x Utöpia Ocean Plastic® artist flag series forms part of an ongoing collaboration with world-renowned contemporary artists, and is created from upcycled plastic bottles intercepted along coastlines around the world.
As the artist explains, “I have five grandchildren, and soon also great-grandchildren. For them and for humanity, the Earth will not be the Earth anymore without the oceans.”
Starting in the 1960s, Le Parc underwent a radical break from traditional art, away from static pictorial work and towards dynamism and constant change. His kinetic installations change the space and permanently recreate it, immersing the viewer fully in the artwork. Cheerfully, Le Parc lifts us into a shimmering, hopping and swinging universal kaleidoscope, whose grace and beauty overwhelms us and hardly lets us go. The profoundly humane and equally political aspect of his art lies in its rigorous denial of any claim to absoluteness. It can be seen as anti-authoritarian and democratic – an art of mutual respect.

Jeppe Hein
Danish artist Jeppe Hein, widely known for his experiential and interactive artworks, next teamed up with Parley and Utöpia to create a limited edition Artist flag, entitled ‘WE ARE ALL INTERCONNECTED (flag)’. The flag is made with Parley Ocean Plastic® and is created from approximately five plastic bottles recovered from island communities and coastlines by our Global Cleanup Network. The edition is limited to 100 flags and is produced by Utöpia, with 100% of the proceeds will support Parley’s education and eco-innovation projects worldwide.
Jeppe Hein’s internationally known artworks can be positioned at the juncture of art, architecture, and technical inventions. Unique in their formal simplicity and notable for their frequent use of humor, his works engage in a lively dialogue with the traditions of Minimalist sculpture and Conceptual art of the 1970s. For centuries, flags have been used for communication, showing allegiance, and building communities. With our collection of artist flags, Parley wants to embolden statements of resistance and hope through the powerful voices of artists.
