Parley x Surfrider Foundation Europe
Kicking off a new partnership, students take action on a beach in France
In March 2017, we teamed up with Surfrider Foundation Europe to clean up Les Sables d’Or beach in Anglet, France. The organization joins the Parley Global Cleanup Network and our commitments toward eradicating marine plastic pollution through the Parley AIR Strategy: Avoid, Intercept, Redesign.
To kick off the partnership, 45 students between the ages of 14 and 17 joined the Surfrider Foundation Europe Staff, volunteers, and Surfrider ambassador Bixente Lizarazu to clean up a stretch of the Anglet coastline. Together they filled 22 bags with intercepted plastic waste, totaling around 990 liters. As much of the recovered plastics as possible will be diverted from landfill and given new life in the movement to protect the oceans. Following the cleanup, students were educated on the Parley AIR Strategy and the role they can all play in the solution.
More than a way to restore and protect the beauty of the marine environment, a beach cleanup is one of the most impactful education tools for communities. It is both empowering and motivating to take action and remove litter from your home stretch of sand. More importantly, it opens eyes and shifts mindsets. Confronting the problem piece by piece changes the way you see the surrounding environment, as well as the impacts of items used in your daily routine.
No one participates in a beach clean and remains unchanged. An afternoon on the beach can inspire a lifetime of stewardship.
