Run for the Oceans 5k
The power of sport to bring us together for the oceans:
550 runners in New York. 59,138 runners worldwide. 14 tours of the globe.
On June 8, 2017, more than 550 runners came together in Long Island City, New York, to run a 5k for the oceans. The event followed our World Oceans Day celebration during the UN Ocean Conference, as part of a week-long series of events held to celebrate, honor, and better protect our oceans. A surprise concert from Pusha T, live mural painting by PangeaSeed Foundation, Empire State Building lit up in blue sent a hopeful message for the future of the ecosystem that allows for our survival. But the overall takeaway is a sobering reality: We are in a race against time. It’s on all of us to act now for the oceans.
More than a run, the event was an invitation to join the movement and a symbol of the unity and action that will drive it forward. That invitation was answered globally; from June 5-11, runners all over the world participated in a digital run for the oceans on Runtastic. In total, 59,138 participants collectively logged 355,866 miles to show their support. That's the equivalent of circling the Earth more than 14 times. It's amazing what we can achieve together.
Thank you to everyone who joined us in New York and around the world. The first run for the oceans may be over, but the race to end marine plastic pollution is just beginning. Let’s keep up the momentum.
