Parley Seychelles WELCOME Dr. Sylvia Earle, PARLEY ARGENTINA TACKLE RIVER WASTE
and parley chile team up with the navy
Seychelles
Parley Seychelles recently welcomed oceanographer, explorer and Parley collaborator Dr. Sylvia Earle for a special beach cleanup on Valentine’s Day with 30 volunteers showing up to show their love for the oceans.
“The cleanup was on Ile Longue island,” explains Parley Seychelles coordinator Alvania Lawen, “and we were blessed to have Dr. Earle join us as part of a documentary for the BBC. Our oceans are 95% undiscovered so we absolutely cannot be the ones who destroy the unknown.”
Altogether, the team cleaned up 212kg of debris, of which 113 was plastic. Our thanks go out to Sylvia, the BBC, SeyCCAT, Seychelles Dive Federation School and Nesi.
Argentina
Click through the slides above to see the before and after shots of Parley Argentina’s recent river interception event in the Tigre area of Buenos Aires, where 20 volunteers joined forces to collect 300kg of plastic pollution.
“The river was super polluted, especially from plastic bottles,” explains Parley Argentina coordinator Yago Lange, “But there was amazing energy from our small team of volunteers and even some tears after we finished. It was pretty emotional, with everyone sharing their experience and ideas to create change against plastic pollution.”
Chile
Engaging with local and national agencies is a crucial part of Parley’s strategy, and our program in Chile enjoys close cooperation with the government and Chilean Navy under their Directemar initiative.
As Parley Chile coordinator Rodrigo Farias explains, “they are in charge of the coastal edge of Chile and we have been working together for a couple of years. For this cleanup, we were joined by big wave surfer Ramon Navarro, local partners Olas Limpias and members of the Chilean Navy to clean the area of Morro in Bahia Inglesa. We really like to return to the areas after a year and see how the difference has been every year. This time we intercepted less plastic in the same area than 2019 so it makes us very happy.”
