TALISKER X PARLEY: FOR WILDER SEAS
To mark the launch of the Talisker x Parley Wilder Seas whisky, we head to the areas of the world that we’re working TO HELP PROTECT
The sea is vital for all life on this planet, a myriad of unique ecosystems, home to hundreds of thousands of species, with so many more still to be discovered. Protecting the sea is essential for preserving our future, a belief that’s at the cornerstone of our partnership with Talisker. Only 13% of the world’s seas are still truly wild and undamaged by intense human activity, so it’s crucial that we safeguard the sea against destructive practices that threaten its survival. Working with a network of scientists and organizations around the world, Talisker and Parley have committed to support the preservation and protection of 100 million square meters of marine ecosystems.
The Talisker x Parley: Wilder Seas Single Malt Whisky is a limited edition release bottled in 100% recycled glass, designed with a ceramic decoration to reduce labeling, with topographic lines inspired by the undulating underwater landscape of Skye’s coastline. Talisker is donating £3 from every bottle made to Parley initiatives that support ocean protection and preservation.
Native to the Isle of Skye, Talisker’s home, sea forests are prime underwater habitats which cover 25% of the world's coastline and play a critical role in planetary health, but are vanishing four times faster than rainforests. The new Talisker x Parley: Wilder Seas Single Malt Scotch Whisky will raise funds to support vital projects to help protect and preserve three of these sea forests located off the coasts of Scotland, South Africa and Chile.
Together, Talisker and Parley are supporting groundbreaking scientific research in the remote Orkney Islands in Scotland by partners Plymouth Marine Laboratory, Heriot-Watt University and Blue Marine Foundation that demonstrates the vital role of sea forests in preventing climate change. In South Africa, Talisker and Parley are supporting the protection of the Great African Sea Forest, home to thousands of species, many of which are found nowhere else on earth. In Chile, we’re collaborating with local organization Fundación Rompientes, to keep the oceans wild so that future generations can continue to enjoy them.
“Together with Talisker, we’re bridging design, eco-innovation and conservation in a tribute that honors the beauty and fragility of these magical forests and supports the work towards their protection.”
CYRILL GUTSCH — CEO & FOUNDER, PARLEY
To mark the launch of the Talisker x Parley: Wilder Seas Single Malt Whisky, we created three films that spotlight our impact work taking place in Scotland, Chile and South Africa, and zero in on the importance of kelp’s role in maintaining biodiversity in our oceans. The three For Wilder Seas films are also personal stories from the field – we meet blue carbon expert Dr Ana Queirós and hear how her lifelong love of the ocean led her to studying kelp. We visit marine biologist Loyiso Dunga in South Africa and get insight on how his respect for his ancestors informs his life’s mission to protect the Great African Seaforest. We head to the Piedra Del Viento Sanctuary in Chile to meet Parley Country Manager Rodrigo Farias Moreno and see the work being done by Fundacion Rompientes to protect the area’s coastline, alongside a local community who have stewarded the area for centuries. Watch the films below.

SCOTLAND
Dr Ana Queirós is a world-renowned expert on kelp and blue carbon. She studies kelp at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, in particular tracing the carbon-rich biomass that kelp sheds during its seasonal cycle, which is released into the ocean and then stays on the seafloor away from our atmosphere. These areas need to be located and protected, and Ana has been working in Orkney, Scotland to find these parts of the seabed, parts of our ocean that must remain wild.
SOUTH AFRICA
Loyiso Dunga’s whole life has been dedicated to environmentalism, studying water science at the University of Cape Town. While working as an intern he managed a database of undersea images, sparking his love for underwater forests and beginning his journey to protect the Great African Sea Forest, something that was inspired by his grandfather, who tracked the ocean for traditional medicines. Here, he explains why kelp is so vital, and the importance of protecting it.
CHILE
This is the story of the Piedra del Viento Coastal Marine Sanctuary and the local kelp harvesting community that have been collecting seaweed from the shore for generations. Through Rodrigo Farias Moreno we learn about the serene, untouched beauty of the area, the work being done to keep the oceans wild, and the importance of staying connected to nature.
