Developed by Parley and our network of material scientists, Parley Ocean Plastic® is a range of premium materials created from upcycled plastic intercepted in areas where mismanaged waste poses a threat to marine life and coastal communities.
The world has produced some 8.3 billion metric tons of plastic since 1950. Almost every piece ever made still exists in some form. The vast majority persists as pollution in landfills, the oceans and the environment. At least 11 million metric tons of plastic waste enters the oceans every year. The plastic that floats on the surface or washes ashore is just the tip of the iceberg of a much larger issue. Plastic is now considered virtually ubiquitous, and still more plastic is produced every day.
To raise global awareness of the threat of marine plastic pollution while catalyzing solutions, Parley invented Parley Ocean Plastic®, a range of premium materials made from intercepted and upcycled marine plastic debris.
Parley Ocean Plastic® provides a replacement for virgin plastic materials across a range of applications and allows for the implementation of our long-term strategy: Parley AIR — Avoid, Intercept, Redesign. Working with major brands, fashion designers, furniture makers and more, we have created a global supply that continually removes plastic from ocean-facing island nations and transforms it into Symbols of Change — products that support the cause and our long-term vision for a Material Revolution.
1. COASTAL INTERCEPTION
Parley uses a variety of approaches to engage the public and professionals for maximum impact. In addition to cleanups and education programs, waste plastic is collected at community interception points and by teams of local collectors.
2. COLLECT & SORT
Intercepted material is baled and prepared for transport by ship. Our preferred sorting partners in each country go through an extensive auditing process that guarantees the highest standard product and treatment of employees.
3. TRANSFORM
Various plastic types are transformed into performance
yarns and fabrics. Finished Ocean Plastic® materials are then used to create eco-innovative products that become ‘Symbols of Change’ supporting our initiatives and more material innovation.
Our collaboration with the iconic French fashion house takes Ocean Plastic® to new levels of luxury – demonstrating the versatility and reliability of our repurposed ocean yarns and fabrics.
